Somegirl: Revisiting The Past

Stephen Mork, the mastermind behind Somegirl, brings us a revisited classic from the early 2000's, when his first Album was released on the American and now defunct label "A Different Drum."

I must confess that I have been a fan of his work from the beginning, as I have always liked female-fronted bands, and although Somegirl's history is complicated and has lacked stability, Stephen has always found a way to keep creating music and delighting their fans with songs that, more than just songs, could sometimes be considered works of art.

Stephen managed to get a new singer, Amanda Cruz, who stayed for about two years and with whom he recorded the second album "She's Full Of Secrets" in 2005. 

Unfortunately, after releasing the album, Amanda was forced to leave the band due to having to relocate to her home state, Texas.

That was the end of their work together.

Throughout his work, you will find several singers from all over the world. At the beginning, the intention was to have a steady singer and do what all normal bands dream of doing: making music and playing concerts.

The first issue came when Kristin Buckman, Somegirl's first singer, left the band after releasing their first album "I've been Known To Be Completely Wrong" on A Different Drum in the fall of 2002.

Once more, Stephen had to find yet another singer.

This time it was Laura Mitchell from the band "Endless Blue." Together, they recorded in 2008 Somegirl's third album called "The Velvet Hour."

The album, in my opinion, is still one of the best ones by the band.

Guess what happened? After recording the album, Laura also left the band due to personal issues.

It was at this point that Stephen decided to focus on making music and simply work with guest vocalists, giving the project a much more diverse feel. Unfortunately that comes with a huge price: not being able to play live and all that comes with that (not being able to attract more listeners), which is one of the main reasons why Somegirl has always remained an obscure band.

Somegirl has been releasing albums, singles and EPs quite consistently, and it was in 2016 when I decided to ask Stephen if he would like to work with Fangtasia Music and try to "rescue" the project. Little does he know that my intentions were selfish and I basically did it for my own sake, as this gives me the possibility to hear the tracks before anyone else. ;)

Under Fangtasia Music, Somegirl has released several productions and has also re-released previous records from the old days in A Different Drum.

The most notorious release, so far, has been the cover version of "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is" by Irma Thomas. The song, being the central theme in the TV show "Black Mirror", has led to a spike in interest for Somegirl's version, and that has allowed the band to get to new audiences.

On June 1st, 2018, Somegirl's latest EP "Some Grrrl (Retouched) was released. A revisit of one of their very first songs.

On October 19th, 2018, Somegirl released their 16th anniversary compilation called "Sweet 16". It contains 16 of the band's favorite tracks.

On June 6th, 2019, Somegirl released the first volume of what will be known as "Darkened Room Sessions". The song "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is" is the first one to be reworked in a darker, more atmospheric way.
